Creating Our 2nd Collection Of Skate Decks
After our first batch of Decks started to sell out in loads of sizes, we knew it was time to get to work on some fresh new designs. We love designing decks and seeing them come to life, we feel like proud parents!
The Deck Design Process
We love trying out different design ideas with Triple 3. We're all about experimenting with new flavours to see what's the most delicious. We love the freedom to try out weird stuff we like the look of. So we start off by scouring through all the notes and ideas we've scribbled down over the last few months and finding images and photos of associated things, we mash that all together and come up with initial sketches.
Our Ray Gun deck started out like this. He begun as a humble kids Ray Gun on a T-Shirt and then we had a designer map our hourglass logo all over the body of a hand drawn Ray Gun. It looked sick, but it needed something a bit more to make it. So we played around with retro looking text and popped it onto some decks. We figured it needed to look even more nostalgic and retro, so we found a classic old school skateboard shape to give it that old school vibe and went down that route.
Once we had 8 or 9 designs we were happy with, we asked all our Skate Team what they thought and made a few tweaks based on their ideas.
Manufacturing Our Skate Decks
With the designs wrapped up, it's on to the manufacturing side. We love being able to manufacture or decks in the UK. There is only place that actually properly makes Skate Decks in the UK, from pressing to printing and that's the legendary Big Aye Skateboards.
They source the finest Canadian maple 7 Ply wood from reliable and ecologically sound companies and press them in their London warehouse into beautiful decks. Our order was a bit of a monster, shelves soon filled up with pressed decks ready to print.
After varnishing and getting them ready to ride, our designs were printed onto the decks, our logo engraved on the flip side and they were ready to roll. We were trying out some new shapes this time as an experiment. We went for the vintage Cola Shape for our Ray Gun deck and a twin tail for our Junglist script one. The others remained popsicle, we also expanded our size range a little.
As you can see from this family portrait, they all look very happy together.
They were packed up in boxes, labelled, stacked into a large wobbly tower of skate decks and shipped off to our warehouse, ready for orders.
Photographing Skate Decks
Of course you can't sell anything online without a nice photo. Many companies use mock-ups, but we like the real thing. So one of each deck was shipped off to Hype Studios in Basingstoke for a shoot alongside all our new T-shirts. This time we wanted a few different shots showing the true shape of the deck to give buyers a better feel of how it will ride.
Once again Hype Studios delivered the sickest of shots, so good that we regularly get asked if they are mock-ups. They aren't, those are real photos you see.
The Finished Skateboard Deck
After designing, manufacturing, photographing and packing, our decks are finally ready to go on sale. You can see the entire collection of all our decks on out online skate store, ready to roll with quick delivery.
We sent out a Skate Deck to everyone on our team, who are out riding them now at a skate park or sweet spot near you.
Thanks to everyone who helped and supported us in our mission to produce a beautiful range of decks, we are very happy with the end result and we hope you love them as much as we do.
